In medieval Europe, artists prized it above gold because of its vibrant, lasting color and rarity. Lapis lazuli was mined only in the mountains of Afghanistan and had to be transported thousands of miles through dangerous trade routes. This scarcity made ultramarine a symbol of wealth and status.


Artists reserved ultramarine for the most important parts of their paintings, often using it to depict the robes of the Virgin Mary or other sacred figures. The pigment’s brilliance and durability made it a favorite for religious art, where color conveyed spiritual significance. Long before ultramarine, Egyptian blue was the first synthetic pigment created by humans. Dating back to around 2600 BCE, ancient Egyptians developed this vibrant blue by heating a mixture of silica, lime, copper, and an alkali. How Artists Made Paint Before Tubes Existed


Before the invention of paint tubes in the 19th century, artists prepared their own paints by grinding pigments into powders and mixing them with binders like egg yolk, wax, or oil. This process was time-consuming and required skill to achieve the right consistency and color intensity.


Painters often carried pigments and binders separately and mixed them on palettes or even on-site. This limited mobility and the ability to paint outdoors. The preparation also affected the texture and drying time of the paint, influencing artistic techniques.


The invention of paint tubes by John G. Rand in 1841 revolutionized painting by making pre-mixed, portable paints widely available. This innovation allowed artists to work more freely and experiment with new styles, including plein air painting.


Why Oil Paint Changed History


Oil paint transformed art by offering greater flexibility, richness, and durability compared to earlier mediums like tempera or fresco. Made by mixing pigments with drying oils such as linseed oil, oil paint dries slowly, allowing artists to blend colors smoothly and create subtle gradations.


This medium enabled the development of techniques like glazing, where thin layers of transparent paint build depth and luminosity.
